Indiana National Guardsmen help stranded Hoosiers during blizzard

As Hoosiers found themselves being buried in the snow due to a winter storm that swept across the state, approximately 240 Indiana Guardsmen responded to the governor’s call to assist state and local authorities.

During their mission beginning Wednesday evening, Task Force North soldiers assisted eight vehicles stranded in the snow. The soldiers’ response demonstrated how National Guardsmen stand ready to help their local communities during times of crises. Task Force North comprises teams in Gary, Lafayette, South Bend and Fort Wayne.

“This mission showcases what makes the National Guard so incredible,” said Brig. Gen. Justin Mann, the Indiana National Guard’s director of joint staff. “When called to action, we are able to make a direct positive impact on our communities and assist our neighbors. Our training and our real-world experience help to make us an effective force to assist state and local emergency management agencies.”

With nearly 50 highway assistance teams divided into three regions across northern, central and southern parts of the state, Indiana Guardsmen remain ready and responsive to assist Hoosiers in need, alongside state and local agencies.
