Substance Abuse: What about it?

multiple images including pills, alcohol, prescription drugsPeople abuse substances such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco for varied and complicated reasons, but it is clear that our society pays a significant cost.

Abused substances produce some form of intoxication that alters judgment, perception, attention, or physical control.

Drug and/or alcohol abuse will affect your ability to be an effective Warrior, and will inevitably affect your relationships with friends and family, your financial stability, your health, and your career.

Substance abuse and its effect on service members is a high priority, high visibility issue within the military high command.

Programs for education, prevention and treatment are available to service members, including a self-referral program.

Commanders and Supervisors

  • There are many responsibilities on commanders, supervisors, and unit prevention leaders for the identification and mentoring of at-risk servicemembers.

  • The military has put together and resourced a detailed program for education and training of persons in position of authority like yourself who might need to assist servicemembers suffering from substance abuse. Below are links to resources.
  • After reviewing the materials available, contact the local Substance Abuse Coordinator for assistance and/or to schedule a training session with you, your staff and your unit.
