With ties to Pearl Harbor in 1941, the structure was originally designed and built as a Naval Armory on the shores of Lake Michigan to train up signalmen in the US Naval reserve. Even though the Navy has not occupied the Armory since 1965, the nautical theme is still very present in the architecture and design.
