219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade

Mission Statement
219th BFSB conducts intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations to enable the supported commander to precisely focus joint elements of combat power and simultaneously execute current operations while preparing for future operations.  On order, the brigade is postured to provide relevant and ready forces to the Governor of Indiana and Combatant Commanders, in defense of our State and Nation.

Command History
The 219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade (BFSB) is a statewide entity with units in 16 cities and 2,170 Citizen Soldiers from our small towns to large cities serving in its ranks. The 219th will maintain its headquarters at the Camp Atterbury National Guard Armory with a 174-man unit until 2011, upon the opening of the new armory in Franklin. One of only six of its kind in the Army National Guard and two in the active Army, the units of the 219th BFSB are designed to be employed to provide intelligence and limited interdiction of enemy forces and potential threats anywhere in the world.

219th BfSB patchThe arrow-shaped insignia, adapted from the U.S. Recondo School, highlights the Recondo/Reconnaissance philosophy of integrity, developing the traits of smart, skilled, tough, courageous, and confident soldiers. The divided background colors of blue and red signify the unit’s lineage to the 38th Infantry Division. The black sword outlined in yellow emphasizes the stealth required for proper intelligence collection, indicating missions along the forward edge of the battlefield and the Brigade’s readiness to sustain the tip of the battlefield. The lightning bolts symbolize the three tenets of the 219th BFSB’s responsibilities of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

The numbering for the brigade has a historical reference. The number 2 is in honor of the 2nd Infantry Brigade formally located in Kokomo, Indiana. The number 19 represents Indiana, the 19th state (1816).
